Inclusive Healthcare Chatbot
Your Health Advocate (YoHA), is an AI driven healthcare chatbot to support unseen and unheard patients. YoHA learns by listening and offers patient advocacy tips, symptom assessments, and personalized health goal support.
Gender and racial disparity has caused a lack of trust amongst women and patients of color. Research showed that women are 50% more likely to receive an incorrect diagnosis for heart disease, even after having a heart attack. Black patients were 2.5 times more likely to have at least one negative descriptive term in their electronic health records. This project looked at ways to establish trust in diverse patients who have been negatively impacted by healthcare bias.
People want to be seen and heard. When inquiring on the AskWomen subreddit about prompted them to change doctors, 400 stories in less than 24 hours flooded in about not being listened to and being dismissed. Patients felt helpless and frustrated with how to advocate for themselves. Patients of color have yet to see themselves represented in the healthcare system. Chidiebere Ibe, a medical student and illustrator, made waves with his illustration of a black fetus. Most people realized this was something they had never seen. Representation of various skin tones in healthcare education and illustration is severely lacking, further attributing to the lack of trust from patients of color.
Your Health Advocate, YoHA, is an AI driven web based chatbot designed to help diverse patients learn about patient advocacy, access personalized symptom assessments, and have improved personal health awareness. To be relevant, YoHA primarily lives on TikTok and Instagram, creating content of diverse healthcare stories and collaborating with healthcare advocates. Patients can access the bot through either of these platforms or the YoHA site without having to download an app or sign up for an account. YoHA thrives on listening and learning, so the more questions people ask, the better it can anticipate and provide personalized answers. At its heart, YoHA is a safe space for diverse patients to become empowered to take ownership over their health.
Mixed Reality Spectacle for Immersive Learning
Spex is a Mixed Reality spectacle for creative professionals that provides immersive learning tools overlayed onto their existing work environment. Content is created and shared by a network of Spex users to encourage peer to peer learning.
Spex was designed to help creative professionals learn new skills quickly and efficiently. Adjusting to new tools and software in a professional environment, especially a remote one, can be challenging. Looking for help on the internet is often time consuming and distracting, reducing productivity. Our goal was to create an efficient and collaborative way for people to learn new skills and share their knowledge without disrupting their workflow.
People struggle to keep up with changing technology and resort to inefficient online searches for help. Concurrently, social networks have evolved to promote sharing of skills in a bitesize form. In a national survey by Dreambox learning, 35% Increase in engagement and retention when learning with immersive and 3D technologies.
Spex is part physical product and part digital network. The physical product consists of a spectacle with a detachable visor that utilizes cameras and lidar sensors for image scanning and spatial awareness, microphone and bone conduction for audio input and output, and a wireless network connection to interact with content and other Spex users. Spex users can find help by asking Spex or by browsing the community feed for other user created skills via the Mixed Reality UI overlaid onto their work environment.
Crowd Density App for Park Goers During COVID
Go Griffith is a mobile app that provides crowd density information for the visitors of Griffith Park to make informed decisions and enjoy nature safely.
What does safe mean during COVID-19? Griffith Park is one of the largest city parks in the United States. During the pandemic, outdoor spaces like Griffith Park have become treasured destinations for Los Angelinos. However, with such social limitations in place, the park saw soaring numbers of visitors, occasionally having to turn people away.
People need outdoor spaces like Griffith Park for fitness and mental health but don’t know until they arrive how safe they will feel. Having a choice helps people feel safe and reliable information helps people feel comfortable about their choices. Providing crowd density visualizations will help people predetermine their comfort levels before they go.
Go Griffith provides crowd density information for the visitors of Griffith Park to make informed decisions and enjoy nature safely. Users can browse location information, pin locations and be notified of changes, view real-time metrics based on camera data, and experience crowd density simulations.
